Three seriously injured after inhaling toxic fumes in Vieira de Leiria – Portugal Resident
Three people have suffered serious injuries after inhaling toxic fumes released by a chemical reaction during the transfer of sodium hypochlorite at Mariparque (waterpark), in Vieira de Leiria (Marinha Grande).
The victims are the driver of the vehicle who had been overseeing the transfer and a couple, both aged 68, who live in a house adjacent to the waterpark, and “were in the vicinity” at the time.
João Lavos, commander of the Vieira de Leiria Volunteer Fire Brigade, told Lusa that “the victims have been stabilised, and we are ensuring safety conditions at the scene.”
He explained that there had been “a small spill of bleach. While the sodium hypochlorite was being transferred, the liquid came into contact with another substance, causing a chemical reaction.”
It is not clear what that other substance was, or how it came into contact with the bleach.
The three victims suffered what is termed as ‘inhalation poisoning’, and were transported to Leiria Hospital.
João Lavos adds that “the incident did not disrupt the normal running of Mariparque”.
