Older ladies, lots of love: two dogs still waiting for their chance – Portugal Resident

Older dogs are often overlooked by potential adopters, but Charly and Lira are reminders that some of the best companions are the ones who have already experienced a little of life.

Charly is back at Cadela Carlota and, while it is naturally disappointing to see her return, we now have a much better understanding of what this lovely 12-year-old needs from her future home.

Charly’s recent adoption unfortunately didn’t work out. She has always been accustomed to living with other dogs and found it difficult to be the only dog in the household. Despite receiving plenty of love and attention, she would become distressed when left alone and clearly missed having canine company.

There is no blame attached to this. Sometimes it simply takes an adoption to discover what works best for an individual dog, and we now know that Charly would be happiest in a home where there are already other dogs.

She is a calm, sweet girl who is completely accustomed to home life and has plenty of affection to give. At 12, she is unlikely to be looking for endless adventures or a particularly hectic lifestyle. What she needs is companionship, comfort and a family who understands her needs.

Lira is another older girl who has already been through far more than she should have. She has been with us for almost a month after spending an entire month at Ferrel Veterinary Clinic, recovering from Leishmaniasis.

Lira was rescued in Bensafrim after being found wandering alone in a truly deplorable condition. Despite everything she has experienced, she remains an affectionate and gentle dog. Her difficult past has not taken away her ability to trust people or enjoy their company.

Both Charly and Lira are good examples of why older dogs deserve consideration when families are thinking about adoption. They may not be puppies, but they have personalities, experience and an enormous capacity for companionship.

For a family looking for a calmer, more settled dog, an older rescue can be an excellent choice. And for dogs like Charly and Lira, a comfortable home where they can finally settle and enjoy their later years would mean everything.
