Maritime Police release footage of 2.1-tonne cocaine seizure off Alentejo coast – Portugal Resident
Maritime Police have released images of yet another successful drugs’ seizure – this time 2.1 tonnes of cocaine off the Alentejo coast, south of the Tróia Peninsula.
As in a number of these operations, the traffickers were nowhere to be seen. But the drugs, fuel containers and other logistics material apprehended ensured million-euro losses to the overall drug mafias.
This particular operation came about as a result of routine coastal patrols/ surveillance ops.
Officers from the local Maritime Police units in Setúbal and Sines became involved, along with the support of marines from the Portuguese Navy.
During the operation, several bales of narcotics were detected near the coastline, as well as fuel containers and other logistical equipment associated with international drug trafficking, says a statement.
No arrests have been made so far.
The criminal investigation continues under the direction of the competent judicial authority, and is being conducted by PJ Judicial Police.
The seizure took place just days after the GNR in Grândola found 36 kilograms of drugs in the Comporta area, also on the Alentejo coast, following a tip-off from a member of the public.
During that operation, several jerry cans intended for refuelling boats were also found.
And it came as Boca do Rio beach, on the south coast – well known for being a beach without lifeguard cover – was closed to the public for some hours after police discovered an unmanned truck loaded with fuel, and suspected it had been strategically placed to serve incoming drug-boats.
