Bonnie Tyler unanimously honoured by Portuguese Parliament – Portugal Resident
Portugal’s Parliament has unanimously approved a vote of condolence honouring the life and career of Bonnie Tyler, following the Welsh singer’s death at Faro Hospital last week.
The motion, proposed by Chega, was approved by all parties in the Assembly of the Republic on Friday.
In the approved motion, MPs from CHEGA described her death as “an enormous loss to world music and to all those, in Portugal and abroad, who followed her career and recognised her talent.”
Bonnie Tyler died on July 8 at the age of 75, after spending an extended period in hospital.
Born in Wales, Tyler rose to international fame with It’s a Heartache in 1978 before cementing her place among the biggest names in pop and rock with Total Eclipse of the Heart in 1983, which topped the charts in both the UK and the United States. She also enjoyed worldwide success with Holding Out for a Hero, featured in the 1984 film Footloose.
Her 1983 album Faster Than the Speed of Night made history as the first album by a British female artist to debut at number one on the UK Albums Chart. She later represented the United Kingdom at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest.
In 2023, Tyler was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by King Charles III in recognition of her services to music.
