Algarve tees up international golf push at Solheim Cup – Portugal Resident

The Algarve will be promoted to an international golfing audience at the Solheim Cup 2026, as regional tourism authorities look to strengthen the destination’s profile in one of its most important tourism sectors.

Regional tourism authority Turismo do Algarve will attend the tournament, which takes place from September 11 to 13 at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands and brings together the leading women golfers from Europe and the United States.

One of the biggest events in women’s golf, the Solheim Cup attracts a large international following and is seen by Algarve tourism officials as an opportunity to reach golfers and fans in several of the region’s key overseas markets.

The campaign will promote not only the Algarve’s golf courses, but also the wider experiences available away from the fairways, including gastronomy, nature, culture and wellness.

“We want those following the competition to recognise the Algarve not only as a destination for playing golf, but also as a place where golf comes together with gastronomy, nature, culture, wellbeing and other experiences that are part of the region’s tourism offer,” said André Gomes, president of Turismo do Algarve.

He added that the aim is for golf to act as “a gateway to discovering everything the Algarve has to offer, both on and off the course”.

Golf remains one of the Algarve’s key tourism products, with the region’s extensive choice of courses and generally mild weather allowing the sport to be played through much of the year, the regional tourism board says.

Tourism officials also see the sector as particularly important in helping to attract visitors outside the traditional summer season, reducing the region’s dependence on peak-season tourism.

The Solheim Cup has been held every two years since 1990 and follows a team format similar to the men’s Ryder Cup, pitting Europe against the United States. Players represent the Ladies European Tour and LPGA Tour.
