Two men shot and wounded outside bar in Seixal – Portugal Resident
Two men were wounded following gunshots in the early hours of this morning near a nightlife establishment in Amora, municipality of Seixal (in the Lisbon Metropolitan area), according to Public Security Police (PSP).
One man was hit in the arm, the other in the leg. Their lives are not in danger, and they have both been transported to Lisbon’s Garcia de Orta hospital.
The PSP’s protocol with PJ Judicial Police was activated (because offensive weapons were used), and the latter is now responsible for the case.
Following this incident the Socialist Party of Seixal has issued a statement arguing that urban safety requires a concrete response from the local authorities.
The party says it will be presenting an emergency package to strengthen safety in the municipality, with an integrated set of measures aimed at increasing prevention, surveillance and presence in public spaces.
Among measures advocated by the PS is the creation of a Municipal Police force, “strengthening the municipality’s capacity for enforcement and local intervention, particularly in public spaces and nightlife activity and the implementation of video surveillance systems, in the busiest locations and those identified as more sensitive, always in accordance with applicable legislation and in coordination with the security forces”.
The Seixal PS also advocates creating and strengthening the presence of night watchmen, promoting greater surveillance during the nighttime period and a closer presence among residents, shopkeepers and local communities and strengthening and improving public lighting, with priority intervention in the most vulnerable areas, pedestrian circulation spaces, parks, parking areas and areas with greater nighttime concentration.
“Safety in Seixal cannot be managed in reaction to events. Faced with a situation that requires an emergency response, the PS will present a concrete package of measures: Municipal Police, video surveillance, night watchmen and strengthened public lighting. The City Council has tools to act and cannot continue to postpone decisions”, argues Samuel Cruz, president of the Seixal PS Municipal Political Committee.
The municipality of Seixal, in the district of Setúbal, is a local authority led by the CDU (communists), without an absolute majority, through a governance agreement established with the PS/PAN coalition.
Comprising six parishes (Amora, Corroios, Arrentela, Fernão Ferro, Aldeia de Paio Pires and Seixal), the municipality has around 198,254 inhabitants, according to official Pordata data, 27.146 more than in 2021.
This latest incidence of violence comes as the mayor of Lisbon has admitted to being ‘alarmed’ by the situation of insecurity in the capital.
