Speedboat intercepted on high seas, carrying 2.6 tons of cocaine – Portugal Resident
PJ and Maritime police are celebrating another major seizure of drugs on the high seas, this time involving over two tons of cocaine, worth ‘many millions of euros’.
The coup took place on the high seas, southwest of Cabo Espichel when the police, Navy and Air Force worked together to intercept and board a ‘high speed vessel’ (commonly known as ‘narco launch’), carrying approximately 2.6 tons of cocaine.
The boat was dramatically brought to a halt within Portugal’s Exclusive Economic Zone (see video below).
According to a post by Maritime Police, the combined operation, dubbed “Buongiorno”, followed intelligence shared by the Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre – Narcotics (MAOC-N), within the framework of international police cooperation and in coordination with the Italian authorities.
Once the crew of the narco launch realised they were being tracked, they attempted to make a getaway.
Eventually immobilised, police boarded the vessel, and took charge.
The crew – two Spaniards, one Albanian and one Brit – were immediately arrested and are now in police custody.
A statement by the PJ has said that Buongiorno has led to the dismantling of a criminal group dedicated to smuggling large quantities of cocaine into mainland Europe.
In addition to the drugs, officers also seized various items used in the navigation and transportation of the cocaine.
