Portugal wins UN Security Council seat – Portugal Resident

Portugal has secured a seat on the United Nations Security Council after winning election as a non-permanent member for the fourth time in its history – and for the first time ever in the opening round of voting.

The diplomatic victory was hailed by government leaders as a major international endorsement of Portugal’s growing influence on the world stage.

Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel described the result as unprecedented.

“This is the first time Portugal has been elected in the first round. That says a great deal about Portugal’s prestige and the way our foreign policy is viewed internationally,” he said after the vote at the United Nations.

Portugal was competing against Germany and Austria for one of two seats allocated to Western Europe.

While Austria also secured a place, Germany failed to gain enough support, handing Portugal a significant diplomatic victory over one of Europe’s largest powers.

The election took place during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, where member states selected five new non-permanent members of the Security Council.

Portugal campaigned as a “bridge builder” capable of fostering dialogue during a period of growing international tensions and conflicts.

Montenegro celebrates “historic occasion”

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro called the election a “historic occasion” and a “great achievement” for the country.

“This victory dignifies Portugal and projects us onto the world stage,” he said following a cabinet meeting.

Montenegro argued that Portugal’s international influence exceeds its economic and demographic size.

“Portugal is a credible and respected country, a country which participates and intervenes on an international level, and we believe this mandate is proof of that,” the PM said, adding that Portugal’s strength on the international stage is “much larger than its economic or demographic size”

The prime minister also praised the diplomatic campaign that led to the result, highlighting the efforts of Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel as well as support from President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and President-elect António José Seguro.

Portugal will serve on the Security Council during 2027 and 2028, joining the body responsible for maintaining international peace and security.

The council is one of the most powerful institutions within the United Nations, with authority to approve sanctions, peacekeeping missions and resolutions that are legally binding on member states.
