More than 500 flights at risk due to June 3 general strike – Portugal Resident

More than 500 flights are at risk due to the general strike, scheduled for June 3.

Two weeks away from the midweek strike – called in protest to the government’s proposals for labour reform – the potential consequences are coming clear: various unions have indicated that they will be taking part in the ‘national paralysation’, among them SNPVAC – the syndicate of civil aviation cabin crew, and FECTRANS – the federation of transports and communications syndicates.

These alone promise to affect hundreds of flights and myriad public transports.

Predictions today point to the possibility of up to 500 flights being cancelled, along with trains, ferries, buses and metros.

FECTRANS, for example, has “guaranteed a strong mobilisation of the sector”, writes SIC Notícias, while SNPVAC has come up with the estimate of 500 flights being cancelled due to its members’ adherence.

Companies whose workforces mean to support the strike include the Lisbon Metro, Carris (Lisbon public transports), Carristur (tourism transport), Transtejo/ Soflusa (ferries), Fertagus (railway), the Porto and Mondego Metros, STCP (Porto public transports), and CP (Portugal railways). The syndicate of commercial workers, syndicates for municipal staff and state doctors, nurses and teachers have all already announced their support for the day of strike action.

June 3 is a Wednesday.
