Man arrested after allegedly starting wildfire with cigarette – Portugal Resident
A 54-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of deliberately starting a wildfire in Fuzeta, in the Algarve municipality of Olhão, by throwing a lit cigarette butt into dry vegetation.
According to Portugal’s PJ police, the fire broke out on July 5 in a forest area after the suspect allegedly tossed the cigarette into a patch of dry grass, intentionally igniting the blaze.
The fire was quickly brought under control by firefighters, preventing it from spreading to a larger area and nearby homes.
The suspect, who lives in the municipality of Olhão, was identified and arrested by officers from the PJ’s Southern Directorate.
He is due to appear before a judge for a first court hearing.
