Baldé secured the biggest victory of his career at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Toruń, Poland. In a dramatic finale, the Portuguese star produced a sensational leap of 8.46 metres with his sixth and final attempt – a jump that not only earned him the world title but also set a new Portuguese national record.

His remarkable effort saw him finish ahead of Italy’s Mattia Furlani and Bulgaria’s Bozhidar Sarâboyukov, while also registering the best jump in the world this season.

“A remarkable achievement”

During the reception, mayor Rui Cristina praised Baldé’s determination and resilience, describing the victory as “a remarkable achievement that makes all residents of Albufeira proud”.

The mayor highlighted the athlete’s “champion’s spirit”, noting that the winning jump came “at the very last moment” of the competition.

He also thanked Baldé for helping to raise the profile of Albufeira internationally through his sporting success.

“This reception reflects the recognition and gratitude of the people of Albufeira for a victory that is fully deserved and the result of many years of hard work,” Rui Cristina said.
