One dead, three seriously injured, in bus crash in Tomar – Portugal Resident
One person has died and three others are described as seriously injured after a bus careered headlong into a ditch beside Tomar Hospital early this afternoon.
The incident, first reported by Jornal Cidade de Tomar, took place just before 2pm near the hospital’s main entrance.
According to reports, the electric city bus was carrying three passengers in addition to the driver, who is believed to have managed to get out unaided.
The three passengers were freed from the vehicle and taken to A&E, where their conditions were assessed. The surviving two have since been transferred to Abrantes, say reports.
The causes of this accident are still unknown.
One eye witness told Jornal Cidade de Tomar that the bus had stopped to pick up passengers, after which it veered into the oncoming lane at high speed – suggesting that an electrical fault may have occurred.
SIC’s subsequent report mentions a brake failure. And a CNN report cites another eye witness that explains the bus driver appears to have tried to crash into a parked van, to bring his vehicle to a stop, but the speed was such that it literally ‘took off’, smashing through low railings before coming to rest in the ditch.
The fatality is understood to be a 64-year-old woman.
Authorities are at the scene and assessing exactly what caused this accident.
