Portuguese firefighters rescue dog from Spanish wildfire – Portugal Resident
Portuguese firefighters deployed to help tackle the devastating wildfires in Spain have rescued a dog from the flames in Ávila, in what Spanish authorities described as a rare moment of hope amid the destruction.
The animal was found by Portuguese firefighters working alongside Spanish emergency services to combat the major forest fire, which has burned thousands of hectares in the province of Ávila.
After being rescued, the dog was handed over to a patrol from the Salamanca Traffic Division of the Spanish Guardia Civil. Officers then transported it to Salamanca, where it was placed in the care of the city’s Local Police while efforts continue to identify its owner and ensure its welfare.
The Guardia Civil shared details of the rescue on social media, thanking the Portuguese firefighters for their actions and highlighting the close cooperation between emergency services on both sides of the border.
“Amid the smoke and flames of the devastating forest fire in Ávila, there are also stories that end with hope,” the force said.
It added that the collaboration between emergency services and security forces demonstrated that “in such difficult situations, every life matters”.
Portugal has sent firefighting resources to Spain under European civil protection cooperation mechanisms as crews battle a series of large wildfires fuelled by high temperatures, dry conditions and strong winds.
The rescue has attracted widespread praise on social media, with many users commending the Portuguese firefighters for ensuring the dog’s safety while carrying out demanding wildfire operations.
