IPMA warns of a “very sharp rise in temperatures” across Portugal – Portugal Resident
Temperatures will begin to rise from this afternoon, reaching “values above what would normally be expected for this time of year,” comes the latest weather update from Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere, IPMA.
All districts in mainland Portugal, except the Algarve, will be under a yellow warning on Monday and Tuesday due to high temperatures, which could reach 40ºC.
Speaking to SIC Notícias, IPMA meteorologist Patrícia Marques explained that the increase in temperature is being caused by a mass of hot air moving in from the interior of the Iberian Peninsula.
“The wind will shift to the east and carry a warmer air mass, in this case from Spain, bringing this temporary increase in maximum temperatures,” she said, adding that minimum temperatures will also rise.
Temperatures will begin increasing from Sunday afternoon, with “values above what would normally be expected for this time of year,” while the dry weather—with very low humidity—will “start to be felt overnight.”
Then, “on Monday, a very sharp rise in temperature is expected.”
The warning issued by IPMA will be in effect from 9am on Monday until 6pm on Tuesday.
Patrícia Marques added that “inland districts will continue to experience high temperatures until Wednesday. After that, maximum temperatures will gradually decrease throughout the week, eventually falling to around 30ºC.”
On Monday and Tuesday, almost all of mainland Portugal will face either maximum or very high wildfire danger.
“Although there will not be much wind,” the heat and low relative humidity create favourable conditions for the outbreak of wildfires, Marques warned.
