United States sends “warm congratulations” to Portugal for June 10 celebrations – Portugal Resident

The United States secretary of state Marco Rubio has sent “warm greetings” to Portugal today, describing the country as one of America’s “earliest and most steadfast partners”.

In a message shared on the United States’ Department of State website, and by the U.S. embassy in Lisbon, he wrote “As the United States prepares to celebrate 250 years of independence next month, we recognise Portugal as one of our oldest and most steadfast partners. Your support during our nation’s founding forged a friendship that has only deepened over time.

Rubio referred to the “remarkable progress” in the bilateral relationship over the past year, with a partnership between the Illinois National Guard and the Portuguese Armed Forces, “which will strengthen our military cooperation.”

“Portugal has become an official signatory state of the Artemis Accords,” the Secretary of State also noted – referring to the framework of principles aimed at the exploration and civilian use of space, with a focus on safety, sustainability, and international cooperation.

“And we launched the U.S.- Portugal CEO Forum, deepening our commercial ties and driving economic growth in the areas of technology and digital innovation.”

Marco Rubio highlighted the more than 1.3 million Americans who “claim Portuguese ancestry, including many with strong Azorean ties,” reiterating that “the strength of our partnership derives not only from shared interests but also from the bonds between our peoples.”

“The friendship between our nations remains strong, and extend our best wishes to the Portuguese community worldwide in the year ahead,” concluded the secretary of state.
