Parish council president resigns following TV exposé over lavish spending – Portugal Resident
A Socialist parish council president has resigned after state broadcaster, RTP, carried an exposé on his lavish spending with municipal funds.
According to RTP, Isaac Braga, heading up the parish council of Vila do Conde, spent more than €30,000 in a year and a half on tobacco, restaurants, perfumes in a hotel, “and a massage”.
“There were even suspicious cash withdrawals of more than €115,000 from the parish council account”, said RTP’s report.
Speaking to Lusa, Braga has stressed that he is leaving his post “with a tranquil conscience” and gathering all the information he needs, to give the necessary explanations, if asked for them.
“He expressed dismay at not being able to complete his mandate,” writes Correio da Manhã tabloid today, saying that Braga will be returning to his profession, in the wellness sector.
RTP’s report adds that under Isaac Braga the parish council failed to transfer half the funds destined for two school groupings of Vila do Conde, leaving these institutions “in difficulties”.
The situation is under the investigation of public prosecutors, adds CM.
Isaac Braga headed up Vila do Conde’s parish council for PS Socialists the first time in 2017. He was then re-elected in 2021, and 2025.
