Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh to visit Portugal in June – Portugal Resident

The Duke of Edinburgh and Duchess of Edinburgh will visit Portugal between June 1 and 3 in a trip focused on “celebrating the historical ties and modern relationships between the UK and Portugal”.

The visit marks the 640th anniversary of the Treaty of Windsor, the agreement that underpins the world’s oldest diplomatic alliance still in force, according to a statement released by the British Embassy in Lisbon.

During the three-day programme, Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh will travel between Lisbon and Porto, attending events linked to youth opportunity, sport inclusion and Women, Peace and Security initiatives. They are also expected to visit historic sites connected to UK–Portugal relations, as well as meet students and community organisations working on social and educational projects.

It will be the first royal visit to Portugal since 2011, when the King and Queen visited the country in their former roles as Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall. The Duke and Duchess last visited Portugal together in May 2005, when they were the Earl and Countess of Wessex. The Duke also visited separately in 2009.

The long-standing relationship between the two countries dates back to the Treaty of Windsor, signed in 1386, which cemented an alliance between Portugal and what is now the United Kingdom through the marriage of King João I of Portugal and Philippa of Lancaster.
