Mercadona set to open first Faro supermarket in November – Portugal Resident

After announcing that its first Algarve store is scheduled to open in Portimão in October, Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona has confirmed that it will open its second Algarve store in Faro in November.

The new store, which will open in Vale da Amoreira, will feature a 1,900-square-metre sales area, including specialised sections for fresh fish, meat, and bakery items, as well as a “Ready to Eat” self-service zone where customers can eat on-site.

In preparation for the launch, the retailer is hiring for several positions and offering permanent contracts from the first day. For those looking for 20-hour weekly roles, the company is offering fixed shifts with annual pay reaching up to €10,457. Weekend roles of 15 hours per week are also available with a maximum annual salary of €7,843, while full-time maintenance assistant positions offer up to €20,915 per year.

Staff will receive a food allowance and extra pay for working on Sundays or holidays, the company says. Mercadona also offers career progression opportunities and a performance bonus that can equal two extra months of salary after four years with the company. Additionally, the supermarket recently announced it would grant employees up to 29 days of vacation per year, providing a full extra week of rest.

The company confirmed that all new hires will receive paid training with all expenses – including food, transport, and accommodation – covered by the firm.

Interested candidates can apply now online.

Mercadona has been expanding rapidly in Portugal, opening stores across the country on a very regular basis. Its arrival in the Algarve has been in the pipeline for years, a company representative explained last year.

“The arrival (of Mercadona) in the Algarve has been requested for many years and represents an important milestone in our path of internationalisation. It will bring the natural challenges of a region that combines seasonality with year-round life, which our teams were eager to embrace,” said Inês Santos, Institutional Relations Director of Mercadona in Portugal, in September 2025.
