3D drone ‘spectacle’ to mark 60th anniversary of Lisbon’s April 25 bridge – Portugal Resident
An amazing sight over Lisbon’s iconic 25 de Abril bridge is promised after the clock strikes midnight tonight: around 500 drones will take to the skies to create a journey through time, evoking the bridge’s construction, evolution and its pivotal role “in the lives of millions of Portuguese people”.
Thursday, August 6 marks the 60th anniversary of the suspension bridge’s opening, in 1966. In those days, it was called Salazar bridge, commemorating the country’s then dictator.
Everything changed following the 1974 revolution – and now the three state entities involved in the daily management of the bridge – Infraestruturas de Portugal, Lusopone and Fertagus – have joined forces to mark the occasion.
The show will be projected from the south bank of the Tejo river, in the Cristo Rei area. It will be best seen from the Docas area in Lisbon, say the three entities in a statement.
Since changing the face of cross-Tejo travel, linking Lisbon to the district of Setúbal, Ponte 25 de Abril has become one of Portugal’s most recognised images worldwide.
For Infraestruturas de Portugal, Lusoponte and Fertagus, tonight’s joint celebration “represents recognition of the role that Ponte 25 de Abril continues to play in the economic, social and urban life of this country”, standing not only as a “strategic infrastructure, but a place of shared identity and memory”.
Tonight’s show will be attended by the Minister for Infrastructure, Miguel Pinto Luz.
