Ferragudo prepares for annual feast honouring patron saint – Portugal Resident
More than 1,000 people are expected to gather in Ferragudo next week for the annual festivities in honour of Our Lady of Conception (Festa em Honra de Nossa Senhora da Conceição), one of the Algarve fishing village’s most cherished religious celebrations.
Running from August 14 to 16, the festivities combine religious devotion with live music, food stalls and community celebrations, culminating in the traditional procession by land and sea on August 15.
The highlight of the festival begins with Mass at 5pm on the feast day, followed an hour later by a procession accompanied by the Portimonense Philharmonic Band. The procession makes its way to the Ferragudo Lifeboat Station, where fishing boats and fishermen receive a traditional blessing before the statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is carried across the Arade River to Praia da Angrinha. It then returns to land for the final stretch back to the parish church.
The maritime procession reflects Ferragudo’s centuries-old connection with the sea and its fishing heritage, making it one of the most distinctive religious events on the Algarve’s summer calendar.
Festivities begin on August 14, with food stalls (“tasquinhas”), a traditional raffle and live entertainment. The evening’s music will be provided by Brasa Doirada and DJ Licota.
On the evening of August 15, the village centre will host a traditional arraial (street party), with food, drinks and music by Companhia Limitada.
The celebrations conclude on August 16, when the food stalls reopen from 6pm until 1am, followed by a performance from Manuel João.
The festival is organised by Ferragudo Parish Council and the local parish, with logistical support from Lagoa Municipality and the collaboration of local associations.
Held every year on August 15, the celebration honours Ferragudo’s patron saint while preserving traditions that have long linked the community to the sea and its fishing roots.
