Portugal steps up Algarve sea patrols amid migration concerns – Portugal Resident

Portuguese maritime authorities have stepped up daily patrols along the Algarve coast, reinforcing surveillance of the country’s southern maritime border amid heightened concerns over irregular migration in southern Europe.

The Maritime Police and Portuguese Navy, working alongside the GNR‘s Coastal and Border Control Unit (UCCF), have increased coordinated patrols by both sea and land across the Algarve coastline.

According to the authorities, the operation is designed to strengthen the monitoring, detection and interception of vessels that may be linked to irregular migration or other illicit activities.

The move comes as European authorities remain on alert following renewed migration pressures in the western Mediterranean. Recent scenes around the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, on Morocco’s northern coast, have once again highlighted the challenges faced by countries policing Europe’s external borders, prompting neighbouring states to maintain heightened vigilance against potential trafficking and irregular sea crossings.

While Portugal has not reported a surge in migrant arrivals by sea comparable to those experienced in Spain or Italy, the Algarve’s proximity to North Africa means the region remains under regular surveillance as part of wider border security efforts.

The Maritime Police and Navy said the patrols are being carried out in a “coordinated and integrated” manner, ensuring a permanent operational presence both offshore and on land.

Authorities said the joint deployment reinforces the country’s capacity to monitor the coastline and respond quickly to suspicious vessels, while also helping combat other forms of maritime crime.

Emphasising that maritime security is a shared responsibility, the Maritime Police and Navy have appealed for public cooperation. Anyone observing suspicious activity at sea or along the coast is asked to contact the Lisbon Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC Lisbon) or the local Maritime Police command.

The reinforced patrols form part of Portugal’s ongoing efforts to safeguard its maritime border and maintain close cooperation between the country’s naval, maritime and border control authorities.
