Algarve parents demand guarantees after exam grading chaos – Portugal Resident

The Regional Federation of Parents’ Associations of the Algarve (FRAP Algarve) has called on the government to guarantee that no student is negatively affected by the problems that have disrupted this year’s national exam marking process.

In a statement released today, the federation said the failures went beyond a simple technical issue, arguing they exposed shortcomings in the planning, organisation and implementation of the new system used to process exam results.

“When a process of this scale, with such significant consequences for students’ lives, is changed, it is essential to ensure in advance that the necessary conditions are in place for it to work,” the federation said.

“It is necessary to test the system, anticipate problems and have contingency plans ready. What we cannot accept is that students and their families bear the consequences when the system fails,” it added.

As FRAP Algarve pointed out, national exam results play a crucial role in determining final grades, university admissions, school enrolments and other key academic decisions, making it essential that no student is penalised by delays or processing errors.

The federation said this guarantee should extend to requests for exam reviews, registration for second-phase exams, school enrolments, the issuing of ENES certificates and applications to higher education institutions.

It also argued that students should not have to pay for requests to have their exams re-marked where doubts or errors arise as a result of failures in the system itself.

Teachers should not be blamed

FRAP Algarve also rejected attempts to place responsibility on teachers, school leaders or other education staff, arguing they had once again been left on the front line supporting students and families despite often lacking complete information themselves.

“We must recognise the efforts of those in our schools who worked to keep the process functioning under particularly difficult and high-pressure circumstances,” the federation said.

Call for independent review

The parents’ organisation is also calling for an independent and transparent review of the entire exam marking process to establish what went wrong, identify the causes and prevent similar problems in future.

It said the objective was not to fuel political debate but to ensure accountability and restore confidence in the education system.

According to FRAP Algarve, three priorities now require urgent action: guaranteeing that no student is disadvantaged, conducting a thorough evaluation of the failures and preparing a robust contingency plan for future national exams.

The federation also said parents’ associations, students, teachers and school leaders should be involved in developing future solutions rather than only being consulted after problems arise.

The latest statement follows an earlier appeal by FRAP Algarve on July 6, when the organisation called for a temporary return to paper-based marking, an independent audit of EduQA and assurances that students would not suffer because of the problems affecting this year’s national examinations.
