Maritime police retrieve 124 jerry cans of fuel bobbing off coast near Albufeira – Portugal Resident
Maritime police yesterday retrieved 124 jerry cans of fuel, bobbing off the coast near Albufeira
The cans had almost certainly been left for a purpose. Said national maritime authority, AMN, in a statement: “The apprehended fuel drums present characteristics frequently associated with logistical operations used by drug-trafficking networks, namely for the refuelling of high-speed boats while at sea.”
But, in addition to the jerry cans’ almost certain connection to criminal activity, their presence “constituted a danger to shipping in the area” and could have caused “material and/ or environmental damages”.
The cans – detected during routine surveillance operations, designed to combat illicit activities at sea – were collected by members of the Portimão maritime police command.
