PJ arrest two on suspicion of falsifying up to 800 residency certificates – Portugal Resident
The PJ’s counter terrorism unit has today arrested two men, strongly suspected of having set up a network to aid illegal immigration into Portugal. Among the numerous crimes understood to be at play are the falsifying of up to 800 residency certificates (a necessity for visiting foreigners setting out on the process of legalisation in this country).
For now, the pair – aged 42 and 64 – are being investigated for the crimes of criminal association, aiding illegal immigration and falsifying/ counterfeiting documents.
The residency certificates all gave addresses where the citizens named on them did not actually live. As reports explain, the men are alleged to have set everything up minutely, and provided the necessary ‘witnesses’ to attest to immigrants living at the addresses. The fee for this service is said to have been anything from €130 to €200 per person – meaning the men will have made thousands from the 800 residency certificates on the docket.
During the course that took place in Loures and Odivelas yesterday, police say they gathered “relevant evidence” to continue this investigation.
The two men meantime will be presented before a magistrate to determine bail measures.
This case is being led by Loures’ DIAP (department of investigation and penal action) – but it is just one in a sea of other incidents where legalisation mafias have been seen to be very active in Portugal, particularly in the Lisbon area.
