Swimming ban lifted at Albufeira beaches – Portugal Resident
Authorities have lifted the swimming ban which was imposed at Albufeira’s INATEL and Pescadores beaches after water quality tests came back clean.
The ban was put in place after a pipe burst at a local pumping station on Monday, sending wastewater straight into the sea.
Although the leak was fixed later that same day, swimming was quickly prohibited at the affected beaches to avoid possible health issues for swimmers.
In a statement, the municipal council of Albufeira thanked the various authorities involved for their “immediate intervention” in resolving the issue and highlighted the role played by APA (environmental agency) president José Pimenta Machado.
Earlier this week, the council had lamented that these types of leaks are happening too often and that an “urgent” overhaul of the Algarve’s ageing sewage pipes is needed.
