Cold front brings rain and falling temperatures to Portugal – Portugal Resident
A cold front is sweeping across Portugal this week, bringing heavy rain and a noticeable drop in temperatures. Forecasters say the worst of the weather is expected over the weekend, with the North and Central regions set to be hit hardest.
After a relatively mild and stable start to the week, clouds, scattered showers, and clear spells are giving way to a more unsettled pattern. According to Meteored, a dynamic atmosphere dominated by colder air masses is now shaping conditions across the country.
Thursday: skies mostly stable
Thursday started relatively calm, with partly cloudy skies and occasional clear spells. Light, scattered showers may occur in the North and Central regions, though rainfall is expected to be minimal at this stage.
Friday: weather worsens
From Friday, conditions will deteriorate as a cold low-pressure system approaches mainland Portugal. Rain will become more frequent and widespread, initially sporadic but intensifying as the day progresses.
Saturday: rain peaks
Saturday is expected to be the wettest day of the week. Heavy and persistent rain will affect much of the country, with the North and Central regions recording the highest accumulations. Mountainous areas, including Minho, may see particularly intense downpours.
Temperature drop across the country
The unstable weather will bring a sharp drop in temperatures. Highs could range from just 11°C in Guarda to 19°/20ºC in Lisbon and the Algarve, with Northern regions feeling particularly chilly.
Madeira also affected
The Madeira archipelago will continue to experience significant rainfall, especially on the island’s northern coast, as the Atlantic system influences the region.
People are advised to prepare for wet and colder conditions over the coming days, particularly in areas prone to heavy rainfall.
