Sunset hike in Alte marks UNESCO Geopark status – Portugal Resident

A guided sunset hike to Rocha dos Soídos in Loulé is being organised on Friday, May 29 to mark the recent UNESCO recognition of the Algarvensis Geopark.

The initiative, led by the Escola Profissional de Alte (Alte Vocational School), starts at 6pm and will take participants on a 10km route through some of the region’s most scenic inland landscapes.

The walk begins at Fonte Pequena in Alte, passing through Fonte Grande and the village of Soídos before reaching Rocha dos Soídos, one of the highest viewpoints in the Algarve.

Organisers say the location offers not only sweeping views but also important geological features that help explain the Earth’s history.

After sunset, the group will continue to the village of Sarnadas, where dinner will be served at Restaurante Rosmaninho. The menu includes traditional dishes such as xerém (a typical corn porridge) with fried fish and stewed pork cheeks.

The walk costs €12, while the dinner is optional at an additional €20. Transport back to Alte will be provided by bus.

Participation is limited to 30 people, and advance registration is required online.
