Vila Real de Santo António turns back clock to 18th century – Portugal Resident
The historic centre of Vila Real de Santo António will step back in time this month as it hosts the fourth edition of its annual historical festival.
Running from May 15 to May 17, the Festival Histórico – Vila Real de Santo António Setecentista will transform the town into an 18th-century setting, with street performances, music, theatre and interactive activities planned across three days.

Inspired by the town’s origins and its Pombaline layout, the event recreates the period in which Vila Real de Santo António was founded, bringing history to life in streets and public squares.
Two main stages, in Praça Marquês de Pombal and Avenida da República, will host a continuous programme of shows, while other areas will feature street entertainment, food trucks and a traditional crafts market with live demonstrations.
Visitors will also be able to take part in workshops, including 18th-century dance sessions, calligraphy and guided tours of the town. A themed escape room will also be available.

The festival opens on Friday, May 15 at 3pm, with a performance by the Algarve Orchestra followed by a historical reenactment marking the arrival of dignitaries to the town.
Saturday’s programme includes a baroque music concert at the local church (Igreja Matriz) and a large-scale theatre production, “Quando a Voz se Fez Luz”, by the II Acto group.
According to organisers, the main highlight comes on Sunday, May 17, with a historical and ethnographic parade at 4.30pm, expected to bring hundreds of participants into the streets. The event closes with a concert by the Orquestra Barroca d’Aquém Mar.
Alongside the festival, a series of talks marking the 250th anniversary of the town’s foundation will take place on May 11, May 14 and May 15 at the António Aleixo Cultural Centre.

Mayor Álvaro Araújo said the festival has become a key event for the municipality.
“The Festival Setecentista is today a consolidated initiative and a distinctive brand of Vila Real de Santo António. By valuing our heritage and identity, it also helps position the municipality as a year-round tourist destination, tackling seasonality and boosting the local economy,” he said.
Entry to the festival is free.
