FC Porto crowned Portuguese champions for 31st time – Portugal Resident

FC Porto are back at the top of Portuguese football after being crowned the new national champions following a 1-0 win over Alverca at Estádio do Dragão in Porto on Saturday.

A lone goal by Polish centre-back Jan Bednarek was enough to secure the 31st national title for the Dragons, who now lead the table with 85 points and two matches still to be played.

SL Benfica – the only club which still had a remote chance to challenge FC Porto coach Francesco Farioli and his team – follow in second with 76 points after a 2-2 away draw in Famalicão, still unbeaten but with 10 draws. Sporting CP are placed third with 73 points but one game in hand.

It’s FC Porto’s first Primeira Liga title since the 2021/22 season and the first under the leadership of president André Villas-Boas, who took charge of the club in 2024. His predecessor, Pinto da Costa, had been at the helm for 42 years, becoming the president with the most titles won in the history of football – 69.
